Christophe Angus /  Jacques Attali / Gilles Babinet (re) / Catherine Barba / Charles Beigbeder / Jérémie Berrebi / Charles Bianchi / Bertrand Bigay / Jean-Michel Billaut / Mickael Boukobza / Jérôme Bouteiller (rocks ;-D) / Nathalie Brion / Jean brousse / Jean-David Chamboredon / Pierre Chappaz / Julien Codorniou / Elie Cohen / Yseulys Costes / Thierry Crouzet / Michel Dahan / Nicolas Dufoucq / Gaël duval / Laurent Edel / Thierry Ehrman (Yeah!)

U.[lik] Sex Appeal

Yestersday night we've discovered a bug in the registered form during a few hours it wasn't working properly. I will not go into the details of it but we found an amazing thing when looking at the attempt in order to apologize to the people who have suffered from it. I am really sorry for that.

But what is surprising is that in half of the cases peopled tried to registered at least twice with a peak at 4 times.
I found that damn good in a world where you can leave in one click.... It's U.[lik] Sex Appeal.
I wanna go In ;-))

Facebook and the independent George... Sarah strikes again.

Sarahcpr as a great post about facebook and the myth of one Social network to rule all our connexions.
She uses an analogy that I love : the Independant George. For those you love Seinfeld, it's one of the best moment. For those who don't know the video is below (and a transcript at the end). This is how she puts it :

"It’s the same with my co-workers here at Yahoo who have been using Facebook for several years, but now suddenly have to deal with friend requests from their bosses. With co-workers lurking around, the atmosphere has shifted. What was once a fun hangout is now a place where they just can’t be themselves anymore."

--> "A george divided against itself cannot stand."

I had an exchange with Nic yesterday on facebook, he was asking me what i tought about it. I answered him by talking about the "Facebook cleaning" that students do before they leave university or before they apply for a job. When worlds collide it's becoming quite complexe.  It reminds me of friendster beginning when the 3 worlds "bloggers, attendees of the Burning Man festival, and gay men mostly living in New York" first collided (Source danah).

Hopefully Sarah has worked on a solution so we could get naked (at least with whom we want) and rule the world. I don't know if this radical transparency is already a myth (See wired's cover just below) but I've shared some intimates thoughs on twitter and the result was quite funny (You are a hall of Fame dear).

As you can see, I am not sure what is the right solution. I've always see that probleme with a puzzled eye ;-) So maybe splitting it could be great ... anyway it's gonna be a huge identity management problem. But I am sure than facebook will not become an API for friends management. The reason they added Apps was to create these social objects so we deal with everything inside their closed walls. Going down sarah's road seems a very good solution even if i am not sure how we (the users) are going to handle it. There are still a lot of opaque value in the social web.

Transcript :
G.Costanza: You have no idea the magnitude of this thing if she is allowed to infiltrate this world then george costanza as you know him ceases to exist. You see, right now I have relationship george but there is also independent george, that's the george you know, the george you grew up with, coffee shop george, liar george, buddy george ...
J.Seinfeld: I love that george
G.Costanza: Mee too.And he is dying Jerry. If relationship george walk trough this door it will kill independent george. A george divided against itself cannot stand.

Attribute of successful Internet Startups

Nic Brisbourne just wrote an incredible post on what can make an internet startup successful.
It was inspired by a presentation from Jyri Engestorm founder of Jaiku (I should try it now that i get the twitter thing). I've enclosed the presentation because it says a lot by itself :

Nic make a very good point about "essence"

how the service will operate as an emergent system - liquidity, status, buzz or UGC are common forms of “essence”

It reminds me of a phrase I found : "Forget selling features. Sell status, sell luxury, sell solutions, sell hope, sell inspiration" Know i am even eager to say ... sell identity ! Bourdieu would say Symbolic Kapital ;-)

The second point he made was about "social objects":

Think photos on Flickr, bookmarks on Delicious, or music on Last.fm and you start to get the picture.

Nic is right it's not an obligation (Myspace is an exception because they were the 1st and at that time "social objects" where picture and comments), but it made me think about facebook and i think the all idea of Apps is to give more social objects to create stickiness. It's only the beginning of my thoughts but I will digg because I have and will continue to dig Nic's trails.

More EPIC Vision of the WEB: the media revolution, the prosumer and I

Google_amazon This video about Prosumer is excellent. Olivier Ezratty (a BA in U.[lik] ) has been using the word since last year ... and I agree with M.Arrington it's great term.

This video is using the EPIC format of travel trough time to show the changes of the media world. (see all my post about an epic vision -Mainly in French-)

There are some very great ideas in it, like :

  • Amazon! buying yahoo (even better than Google buying Amazon) Content will rule, software is something else (Google buy Microsoft)
  • "Advertisement is choosen by the content creators, by the authors themselves and becomes infromation, comparison and experience" I agree so deeply !
  • Prometeus and plaze are even closer than we think probably in 5 years.
  • And the last thing that I love .. Voice = P.K.dick Avartar ;-)

BRILLIANT ! An EPIC Vision as i like them. Enjoy the video just below :

The Next Web Award made an amelie Poulain tour of Amsterdam

Mihai_thenextfrencheweb ThenextfrenchwebThenextweb had an award ceremony. We'v all voted for companies ... but none of them was there to receive the price... so users took them !

I was the only one really beta testing joost so ... I am an happy user ;-)  (it will be a pleasure to give them back -but first I need to fix it-)

The price made our evening (we all took pictures with it, even the waiter).

---> Then it followed us on the saturday (& only me on the sunday) for an amelie poulain road trip.
From what I can tell he had a lot of fun. All pictures are geotagged in Flickr so you can make the trip too.

It was a pleasure to spend the conference, the evening and for some the week end with Richard / Charles / Colette / Mihai / Oliver / Stephane and the cameraman Alexander.

And guys ... i'll book the table for "la semaine du gout" (book the week 15-21/10) only if you post ... alexander is already qualified !

More about the event tomorrow.

Collaborative Micro-Filtering

Joshua Porter wrote a great post on circles of relationship a few days ago. It has generated many great responses and a new post that summarize all these contributions. Since it's a subject we have been working on with my partner, i would like to share a very concrete approach of it : U.[lik]

First let's have a look at the circles evolution from Ben Schneiderman (via Joshua) to People like us from Alex Mather:
Circlesofrelationships Circles_like_us_by_amather

The Schneiderman representation is clearly a pure social approach.

Alex Mather one is a pure Social Network approach mainly focus on the 18-30 years old group. According to him there are two main points that organize the circles:

  1. Self, Friends, and “Those Like Us” are in a protected area.
  2. Friends and even “Those Like Us” are more important than Family!!!

--> I agree at 100% !

The next step is from Sarah Cooper (Visual designer at yahoo) who introduces the idea of Collaborative Micro-Filtering. She has designed a quick demo of what it should look like. She also tries to build the specs for such a service.

The whole idea is to be able to get the right recommendation by using the right people for each different subject.
Her mom & danna for clothing & Joel, jim and rashid for movies. --> Again I agree @ 100%.

That's exactly these kinds of ideas that we have been working on over the last 2 years.
