And they turned this piece into something of lifestyle

I was working on my hall of fame this morning and especially on Steve Reich.
If you follow this blog you know that i am a hug fan of him. I've posted about it several times (Piano Phase, Daniel Variation, Eight lines)

And today I've found this video :

One line shocked me (exegetic shock) : "And they turned this piece into something of lifestyle"
That's exactly what I have done over the past 4 years while listening to Reich nearly every week (Most scrobbled artist ;-).

That's also what I have done with photography over the last 8 years :

Mon mur de photos

That's also what i've done with U.[lik] and my virtual identity.

Life is now about adhesion .... remixing the past for the better. Share feelings and build a deeper me.

Leafar Annual report

For the new year i wanted to do my annual report, but i was to busy at the time.
So I'll do it now (because i love the movie below - Source) ... i was very very impressed with the global stats, I could do a full life version but working my weblife out was already enough work.

See the full list by clicking on the link below.

Social markers or the shared consumption paradigm

Occurrence of the term "Social Objects" is increasing a lot in recently. Jaiku Founder, Jyri Engstrom's who first published idea on the subject of "Social Objects"  has a nice synopsis inspired by Karin Knorr Cetina (One of the best presentation read in a long time).

So what are these social objects ?? McLeoad definition is the following :

The Social Object, in a nutshell, is the reason two people are talking to each other, as opposed to talking to somebody else. Human beings are social animals. We like to socialize. But if think about it, there needs to be a reason for it to happen in the first place. That reason, that "node" in the social network, is what we call the Social Object.

U.[lik] like Flickr, Wordie, Librarything, watzatsong ...etc are all networks build on social objects. They are about content with people inside. I do believe they will have the lion share of social activities in the future because people will be able to aggregate them (but that's another story). Our socialization patterns are changing at an incredible pace and here are two idea and two excellent drawings that show the importance of social objects that can even be seen in evolution of the marital matches (using meetic or any other social places because social is also dating and sex)

Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers in a ESSAY ABOUT MARIAGE AND THE MARKET concluded :

So what drives modern marriage? We believe that the answer lies in a shift from the family as a forum for shared production, to shared consumption. In case the language of economic lacks romance, let’s be clearer: modern marriage is about love and companionship. Most things in life are simply better shared with another person: this ranges from the simple pleasures such as enjoying a movie or a hobby together, to shared social ties such as attending the same church, and finally, to the joint project of bringing up children. Returning to the language of economics, the key today is consumption complementarities-activities that are not only enjoyable, but are more enjoyable when shared with a spouse. We call this new model of sharing our lives “hedonic marriage”.

Mc Leaod has some interesting thoughts on this new social matching if we take them on a very shallow level (it made me laugh at loud ;-D). Social Markers are a prime form of social shorthand, that people use to STAKE OUT the ecosystem they're occupying.

This is a nice piece on friendship: friending ancient or otherwise ?

“With social networks, there’s a fascination with intimacy because it simulates face-to-face communication,” Dr. Wesch says. “But there’s also this fundamental distance. That distance makes it safe for people to connect through weak ties where they can have the appearance of a connection because it’s safe.”

And while tribal cultures typically engage in highly formalized rituals, social networks seem to encourage a level of casualness and familiarity that would be unthinkable in traditional oral cultures. “Secondary orality has a leveling effect,” Dr. Strate says. “In a primary oral culture, you would probably refer to me as ‘Dr. Strate,’ but on MySpace, everyone calls me ‘Lance.’ ”

And if you can read french I also advice that you take a look at this article about tribal rituals.

2007 : the year of the virtual identity ... what's next

More than a year and a half ago I started working on the virtual identity, we then created lounge (in U.[lik])  where you can add the badges for your other social networks services. The idea was to unable people to give link to other pieces of their virtual identity.

Profile_lounge_ulik

We've been the first site to do so with image (using inspiration from wordie). But It was merely reflecting my
bookmark toolbar :

Nav_bar_firefox_leafar

Many websites are now endorsing this trend ... which is good.... We are the puzzle ;-D

2007 was and will stay as the identity year (no need to  proove it)

I don't believe in a one place for all (i.e facebook, despite the time i've spent on it), because i believe you need a dedicated application for very different activities... and i am not talking about apps. No social networks will be as good as flickr for my pictures. But facebook have shown the way for tomorrow identity to a large number of users (again a puzzle but this time of apps)... also made them more savier which is also very good.

So what is next for 2008 in the identity space:  ambient intimacy. (Small presentation here)
The definition is pretty good ... but despite an easy access, it's the most complicated concept i've approached over my last 3 years on the web. I've been experiencing it for a couple of months and we still have a lot to learn. I think it has a huge impact on photography (the medium totally changed over the last 3 years...and  Pierre Bourdieu is probably right) and a lot of new applications (twitter, tumblr, the is inside facebook...etc) are only starting to open the way to this new genetic of relations (.

2007 was a year of transition for U.[lik] and me .... vivement 2008 et de nouvelles aventures identitaires !!
The world is changing really fast ... here are two video to remind it :

Bonne année à tous.

Facebook and the independent George... Sarah strikes again.

Sarahcpr as a great post about facebook and the myth of one Social network to rule all our connexions.
She uses an analogy that I love : the Independant George. For those you love Seinfeld, it's one of the best moment. For those who don't know the video is below (and a transcript at the end). This is how she puts it :

"It’s the same with my co-workers here at Yahoo who have been using Facebook for several years, but now suddenly have to deal with friend requests from their bosses. With co-workers lurking around, the atmosphere has shifted. What was once a fun hangout is now a place where they just can’t be themselves anymore."

--> "A george divided against itself cannot stand."

I had an exchange with Nic yesterday on facebook, he was asking me what i tought about it. I answered him by talking about the "Facebook cleaning" that students do before they leave university or before they apply for a job. When worlds collide it's becoming quite complexe.  It reminds me of friendster beginning when the 3 worlds "bloggers, attendees of the Burning Man festival, and gay men mostly living in New York" first collided (Source danah).

Hopefully Sarah has worked on a solution so we could get naked (at least with whom we want) and rule the world. I don't know if this radical transparency is already a myth (See wired's cover just below) but I've shared some intimates thoughs on twitter and the result was quite funny (You are a hall of Fame dear).

As you can see, I am not sure what is the right solution. I've always see that probleme with a puzzled eye ;-) So maybe splitting it could be great ... anyway it's gonna be a huge identity management problem. But I am sure than facebook will not become an API for friends management. The reason they added Apps was to create these social objects so we deal with everything inside their closed walls. Going down sarah's road seems a very good solution even if i am not sure how we (the users) are going to handle it. There are still a lot of opaque value in the social web.

Transcript :
G.Costanza: You have no idea the magnitude of this thing if she is allowed to infiltrate this world then george costanza as you know him ceases to exist. You see, right now I have relationship george but there is also independent george, that's the george you know, the george you grew up with, coffee shop george, liar george, buddy george ...
J.Seinfeld: I love that george
G.Costanza: Mee too.And he is dying Jerry. If relationship george walk trough this door it will kill independent george. A george divided against itself cannot stand.

Attribute of successful Internet Startups

Nic Brisbourne just wrote an incredible post on what can make an internet startup successful.
It was inspired by a presentation from Jyri Engestorm founder of Jaiku (I should try it now that i get the twitter thing). I've enclosed the presentation because it says a lot by itself :

Nic make a very good point about "essence"

how the service will operate as an emergent system - liquidity, status, buzz or UGC are common forms of “essence”

It reminds me of a phrase I found : "Forget selling features. Sell status, sell luxury, sell solutions, sell hope, sell inspiration" Know i am even eager to say ... sell identity ! Bourdieu would say Symbolic Kapital ;-)

The second point he made was about "social objects":

Think photos on Flickr, bookmarks on Delicious, or music on Last.fm and you start to get the picture.

Nic is right it's not an obligation (Myspace is an exception because they were the 1st and at that time "social objects" where picture and comments), but it made me think about facebook and i think the all idea of Apps is to give more social objects to create stickiness. It's only the beginning of my thoughts but I will digg because I have and will continue to dig Nic's trails.

My Panda !!

P1020873I have been looking for it ... my sister found it.

He is a lot smaller that I would have thought.

He is in "rue des mauvais garcons" (Bad boy street). Funny!

I can hold it in my hand ;-)

I am not sure it's from banksy (so if you have the info)

At a dinner party long ago, a debate emerged about the importance of forgetting versus the techno-utopian desire to remember *everything*. As the animation level of the debate approached unmanageable, a woman at the table confronted the most vocal of the anti-forgetting people, asking him if he was the first child. He looked at her oddly and said no, the second. She smirked and told him that he should be thankful for the power of forgetting because no woman in her right mind would ever go through childbirth a second time if she could clearly recall the pain involved.

* mes deux derniers posts sont tellement twitter.
